Jon Meek, Managing Director of Diamedica UK Ltd, recently led a six-day anaesthesia training program at Phebe Hospital in Suakoko, Liberia, aimed at strengthening the skills of local clinicians, technicians and healthcare providers. The initiative, organised by DAK and in collaboration with WFSA (World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists), Oxygen Alliance, Lifebox, and the Boston-Africa Anesthesia Collaborative, was initiated in response to the discontinuation of Halothane and its impact on rural anaesthesia care.
The training, attended by 34 Biomedical Equipment Technicians and clinical staff from Liberia's Ministry of Health, focused on Diamedica's Glostavent® Helix Anaesthesia Machine. The machine supports Halothane or Isoflurane via a simple extraction of the alternative agent from the vaporiser, the opposite agent can then be filled.
The program covered the principles of draw-over anaesthesia, machine setup and operation, and technical maintenance.
Jon delivered hands-on demonstrations, guiding participants through assembling, disassembling, and troubleshooting the machines. The practical approach ensured that attendees gained confidence in independently managing the equipment.

Liberia’s healthcare system has long struggled with inadequate medical equipment and limited oxygen therapy access. This training marks a key step towards improving patient safety and surgical care by equipping healthcare workers with essential technical skills.
The program also fostered collaboration among biomedical technicians and clinical staff, encouraging knowledge-sharing and peer support to enhance long-term equipment maintenance and patient outcomes.
Mark Luke Country lead, Oxygen Alliance-Liberia said:
“The participants of the training program demonstrated exceptional commitment and enthusiasm throughout the six-day period. The participants effectively absorbed the principles of draw-over anaesthesia, practical user training, and technical maintenance of the equipment, showcasing their dedication to enhancing their technical skills and knowledge. This training has significantly empowered them to ensure better maintenance and operation of critical medical equipment at Phebe Hospital”.
